Renovating Your House – Do an Asbestos Testing
There have been hundreds of deaths due to asbestos poisoning. And, because of its hard nature, it was used frequently in the homes, which were built before the 1980s.Before the researchers found that asbestos is poisonous and inhaling it can cause death, it was commonly used in walls, ceilings and pipes.Hence, in case you are buying a home, which was built in or before the 80s, it makes good sense to get a professional asbestos testing done.
Actually Asbestos is a natural microscopic white material, which has a fibrous appearance. However, its particles keep floating in the air.The problem is if you inhaled too much, it can cause diseases including cancer. However, unless the asbestos breaks into pieces, the particles do not float in the air, and so if your home is not breaking apart, the asbestos will remain intact. But if you really consider renovating it, then conduct an asbestos testing with the help of an expert.
Asbestos testing has to be done carefully so that the fibers will not disperse easily on the air.The first thing that the tester will do is to wear protective gear like gloves, plastic coats and a mask. Then he will cover all areas and surfaces with plastic. He also has to shut off all windows, doors and heating and cooling systems so as to not make the asbestos mix in with the air.The material to be tested will then be blown using a water and detergent mixture. He will use a small knife and cut away a sample to test later on.He will put it in a tightly sealed container. The tester repeats the same procedure for the different samples, and then brings them to the lab for further testing. If it is positive for asbestos, then you must hire experts to remove the asbestos from the house.
But for those who don’t like the idea of spending money on this procedure, there are also asbestos testing DIY kits. This kit contains sample spatulas and containers that are said to be sterilized and you can order one from the internet. The problem with asbestos testing kits is that you still need to bring them to the testing laboratory (which is expensive); the containers are so small, and if you do it incorrectly chances are all the asbestos fibers will mix in with the air and enter your lungs.
